Just about every human endeavour, activity, sport etc is carried out by naturists without the encumbrance of clothes. There are activities for which protective clothing is sensible, but for most things, clothing is totally unnecessary. I have heard of naturists who take their naturism to foolhardy extremes. For example the chap using an angle grinder who set light to his pubic hair, but that pales into insignificance when compared to the Mai Mai, a tribal faction in the Congo. They fight nude and believe that bullets can not touch them.
We list a number of commercial operators but we know very little about them so inclusion on this page does not represent any type of recommendation.
Anyway, to the point of this page:

There are a lot of boat owning naturists, and there are a number of commercial operators. The boats range from pedalloes to ocean liners.
Uncrewed Yacht Charter is available from a huge number of operators. The following crewed boats are either fully naturist, or naturist for some holidays.

There are now many nude cruises and the number and size of cruise ship is growing quite quickly. For example in June 2004: Spanish holiday company.
The bungalow is quite big now - I've built a chunk on the front and a chunk on the back, digging out the foundations and shifting all the spoil myself. I suffer from ashthma and farmer's lung - an allergic response to fungal spores in hay - so I do get a bit breathless. But the exercise is good for me and, in summer, I usually work on the place naked - it's easier to shift stuff when you don't have a shirt and trousers flapping around. I've been a sort of naturist for 30 years and always try to find naturist beaches on my summer holidays.
This is star of stage and screen (well, lecture theatre and TV), the renowned Professor of Landscape Archeology at the University of Bristol. Best known not for nudity, but for wearing rainbow clothing - that wonderful Brummie, Mick Aston.
This isn't really naturism and it has become almost common place. The explosion started in 1999 with the ladies of Rylstone WI.. They raised a huge amount for charity and it has been made into a film.
In April 2002 the Edinburgh Naturist Swimming Club hit back and threatened to do a clothed calendar.
There is a naturist film show followed by food and social once a month at The Grand Venue, Ramsey, Cambridgeshire. It is organised by Cinema in the Buff.
It has been very succesful, due in part to complaints from the local Baptist Minister, and other cinemas have expressed an interest. Stowmarket has already followed suit with a naturist showing of "Cold Mountain".

couple of people cycled along the River Cam during bumps week in June
2002 and Richard Collins occasionally cycles nude around Cambridge
but I have heard of no other spontaneous nude cycling in the UK.
The annual world naked bike ride is growing in popularity. The number of locations and the number participating at each location is growing year on year. The police in London have already indicated that they're happy for the ride to take place in 2006 and have been supportive in the past. Many riders will be nude but this is not a requirement.
What will hopefully become an annual ride is growing in Germany. Only 5 blokes in 2000, but 24 riders in 2001 including a few women. All those bikers who have contributed since then to Peter Niehenke's web discussion Forum have been ecstatic in their praise of Ralf's organising ability and of the fun of the day out.
Some resorts are large enough to make cycling worthwhile. For example, from the extreme north of La Jenny it is about a mile to the beach.
Coast and Country ran a barn dance for many years, and may still do so. Many clubs hold occasional discos from time to time or even weekly in some cases.
Oddly enough, some of the landed clubs frown upon being naked when sitting down for an evening social. It's okay at a barbecue, but for some reason not at the properly laid table. There are clubs that 'say' you can eat in the nude if you want but when you get to the restaurant you will be the only one naked.
There are a number of naturist dining clubs who meet for dinner parties or just plain parties at each other's homes. Dining can be an art, a relaxation, a necessity or a joy depending on the circumstances and when it's with naturist friends it can be fun as well.
An incredible proportion of the population have driven nude. When I can find the survey report I will put in the actual figure.
Noel Edmonds spoke up for the cause on the 21st anniversary programme of Top Gear on BBC2 tonight[16/12/99]. As he sped off in his sports car (a GT40 I think) he said "Sometimes I drive it like this with no clothes on and that's REALLY fabulous!"
2003 saw the first naturist charter flight.

BBC programme 'Gardeners
Question Time' has been recorded at the Naturist
Foundation on two occasions.
How private is your garden? How would your neighbours feel about it? Are you sure? Some friends of mine moved into a house and became great friends with the neighbours but it was twenty years before they bumped into each other at a naturist swim and discovered that they were all naturists! My garden is overlooked from both sides. I just told my neighbours that I was a naturist, didn't get much reaction, and so I got on with it.
Of course there are some gardening activities for which clothing is advisable. I find that shoes are necessary for digging and some prickly plants require a suit of armour but most gardening is ideal for naturism.
The Daily Mail of 28 June 2002 devoted its centre page spread to the Malmesbury Abbey garden and the couple who created it. A naturist couple appeared in the series "Britains Worst Gardeners" building a pond at Spielplatz.
World Naked Gardening Day is the second Saturday in September. There is also a yahoo group. In 2006 the Abbey Gardens at Malmesbury added a fourth clothes optional day in its honour.
Scruffs kiteshop are offering to give demonstrations to clubs.

Protest on behalf of naturism or the right to be nude, the two are not quite the same, is on the NUFF Campaigns page.
What was the most exciting news story out of Spain last year? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ (PETA) “Running of the Nudes,” during which over 600 people from around the world, dressed in little more than red scarves, plastic bull horns, and running shoes, descended on Pamplona two days before the “Running of the Bulls” to provide an alternative that is just as crazy and popular but also cruelty-free. After all, it’s not fun to be bullied, especially for bulls.
As you know, the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, which is why so many people use nudity to send a message of acceptance for all shapes and sizes—and species. This year, we hope to make the event bigger and better than ever. Here’s where you come in—would you be interested in using our posters and leaflets to advertise this exciting event? A bull’s death in the ring is slow and agonising and comes only after being teased, tortured, and stabbed in front of a screaming crowd. The bulls are physically debilitated with laxatives and beatings behind the scenes before the event. Bulls’ horns are shaved, and petroleum jelly may be smeared into their eyes to cloud their vision. Before the matador even enters the ring, a picador stabs and cuts the muscles in the bull’s neck.

Pubs and clubs going nude for a publicity gimic are quite common but there are some that have genuinely naturist sessions.
and one near Great Yarmouth.

The
summer of 2000 saw the first national naturist runs, the BN run held
at Merryhill
(Norfolk) and another at Tything
Barn (Pembrokeshire).
In 2001 the Tything Barn run was repeated and extended. The CCBN run was held at Blackthorns (Bedfordshire) and these are now both held every year. In 2003 a run at the Naturist Foundation in London was added to the annual calendar.
A lot of clubs have their own, fairly low key, runs. eg TANDO (Northumberland) has a woodland path that is increasingly being used as a trail run and Telford (Shropshire) have an annual New Year's Day Charity Fun Run.
There are a lot of runs overseas, but probably the most outstanding is the Bare to Breakers run in the USA.

Wearing clothes in a sauna is such a travesty of all that sauna is about that it should be an offence under the blasphemy act. The same applies to steam rooms and jacuzzis. Sadly, many people have been so thoroughly conditioned by their upbringing that they haven't ever discovered what they are missing. Needless to say naturists don't suffer from these hang ups so they are able to enjoy these activities properly. Most clubs and swims have a sauna. Steam rooms and jacuzzi are also very popular. Victorian Turkish Bath is an excellent website. |
This must sound nearly as improbable as nude skydiving, but it does happen. Article in "This is London" It mentions two places, Les Clapieres near Briancon in France and Obertraun, near Schladming in Austria. There are also two indoor ski slopes that hold an annual naturist session.

Skindeep (Gloucestershire) has a group of members with a special interest in subaqua and snorkelling. They also play octopush which is underwater hockey played with snorkels and flippers.

Not really much to say that isn't obvious to naturists, but non-naturists probably don't realise just how much more comfortable it is without clothes. Perhaps this shouldn't be pointed out to them because then we wouldn't be entertained by the comedy show of first move that strap, then move that one, now do up the back before turning over and at the end of the performance the grand finale. They dance the towel tango just to stop anyone from seeing the bits they have spent all day using brightly coloured bits of cloth to draw attention to! There are health implications, so we have a page about that. |

This ranges from a gentle paddle around the pool on a hot day, through various levels of racing to serious long distance swimming. There are about three thousand leisure swims each year and for the more serious swimmer there are regional, national and international competitions courtesy of CCBN. See the diary for details. Probably the best known nude tennis player was Enid Blyton. Yes, that Enid Blyton. The one who wrote all those children's books.
A wide range of naturist training courses are available. Massage, yoga, self defense, first aid, child protection and so on. Many of them are advertised on the adverts page.
There is a tour operator offering a tour in Namibia, a large part of which is naturist. It also includes the opportunity to try skydiving, flying foxes, balloon flights and many other such activities. As a result of this paragraph they sent us an email, complete with the links I hadn't had time to find before.

There are a number of groups and individuals organising nude walks.
Chilterns walk. If you would like to join Tony B on one or more of his frequent walks phone 07930 662992 or email to be informed if a walk will be on. He says that the walk is very nice with great views and very few (none so far) other persons to bump into.
'Inside Out', BBC1, 30 Sep 2002 did a feature on naturism and part of it dealt with a group of people who do naturist walks in the area. The BBC web site has further information and some video footage. Also, some useful links.

This is such a cliche, that I nearly left it out! However, it is a very suitable sport for the beach, and a lot of naturism takes place on beaches so volleyball is played by naturists. This is a US web site, but they would like cover UK volleyball as well so if you know of any events please send them the information. |
